Strains of Albinos In Leopard Geckos

Strains of Albinos In Leopard Geckos

Tremper Albino: Tremper is the most common strain of albino to be sold. Typically, the albinos that one finds at pet stores are Tremper Albinos. This strain of albinism is interesting because in photos it often times resembles both strains, but in person, because of the loss of color that photos frequently exclude, they are noticeably different. Ron Tremper (www.leopardgecko.com) was the "founder" of this strain, which he has been working with since he hatched the first one in 1996. In 1999, he sold 100 tremper albinos, which is the reason for the abundance in today’s market, due to the ease of producing leopards. Tremper's strain of albinos is probably the most advanced strain of albino, based on the amount of morphs it has been used in, but all of the other strains of albinism are being worked with to catch up to them. Occasionally, a dark Tremper is mistaken for the Bell strain, but the Bell strain has unique characteristics that differentiate them from Tremper's strain. Also, the Tremper Albino is one of two strains that have been proven to produce the "Blazing Blizzards".

Rainwater Albino: Tim Rainwater created this strain in 1999. As far as commonality is concerned, the Rainwater Albino isn't quite as common as the Tremper, but it is still very common. There seem to be a lot of problems with this strain though. Such as, breeding patternless albinos to patternless albinos, because the female typically dies after she lays eggs and it's not known to be from any diseases or deformities. That is the only known situation that that has occurred in though. Typical rainwater albinos are creamy yellow or tangerine. There have been almost neon colored tangerines produced, but they are most likely from Nieves crossings. There bands are pink to dark purple and rarely brown. It is the other strain that it is possible to produce Blazing Blizzards from.

Bell Albino: Being the newest strain of albino, this is also the rarest at the moment. Mark Bell created them almost directly after Ron Tremper released his first Albinos and while Mark Bell was helping Prehistoric Pet on the first Blizzards. Mark Bell decided to give some of his bell albinos to Jay Brewer to breed to some Blizzards, as they planned to create a leopard with red eyes and a white body (Blazing Blizzards). Then Mark produced enough of this strain to release them in 2000. At that time very few breeders bought into this new line. It seems that there is a misconception of color with this strain. It seems that most people think they're brown, but really, they're lighter than the Trempers and more vibrantly colored. Also, they have been attaining a nice tangerine coloration over the years.
